Interview With Alias Kid

Firstly, who are Alias Kid?

We’re just a bunch of mates who don’t really like each other. We got a band together to get people to come out for a drink and three gigs in we were signed to Creation. Since then it's just been non-stop recording, gigging and trying not to fall out with each other.

It’s often projected through the music who your influences are as a band.Who would you cite as your main musical influences and why?

We're into so much stuff it is hard to pin down what the real inspiration is. Sean's really into The Sex Pistols, I'm really into Lennon, but to me music is more about the song than the artist. I don't get infatuated with someone because they write good songs but those songs still have a big impact on my life.

Your music can be described as ‘authentic’ rock. You seem to resurrecting guitar music which a lot of music fans cry out for – why do you feel this impending breakthrough is important in the current climate of the music industry?

There is no grand plan to bring guitar music back in that sense. It’s just to give people what they want, and a lot of people want to listen to us. If it gathers momentum and people latch on, before long that movement happens. If we break on a bigger level I won't be the standing there saying it was all part of the plan. Saying all that, it is important, or even vital, because Ed Sheeran won two Grammies.

You played many prestigious support slots around the UK last year - how was it supporting the likes of Black Grape, Cast, Jesus and Mary Chain and 90s music icons, Happy Mondays?

To be honest I nearly starved to death. I blame our drummer, because no matter how much food they provided backstage, it was all gone before we'd even sound-checked. For me, it was like a weight loss plan. For the band it moved us on, because when you get the nod of approval from bands like that you know you’re doing it right. They could choose anyone but they chose Alias Kid and that sends a message to anyone who’s interested in new bands.

What were your highlights of the touring process across 2015?

We played all over the country, a few places overseas. The big venues were top and a step up in terms of the size of the crowds and stages. Then, our own gigs in Manchester are always very special to us, always sold out and mental. For me though, the highlight of the lot so far was Moscow. I had no idea anyone in Moscow had heard of Alias Kid but we got over there to a two night sell-out. We played on a stage the size of a dinner table at about 2am to a packed venue.  We were totally out of the comfort zone and nearly falling off the stage, but we blew the roof off.

Being signed by massively influential 90s music mogul, Alan McGee to his equally renowned Creation Records (Primal Scream, Jesus and Mary Chain, Oasis), how do you feel the 90s decade has had an effect on you musically?

The 90s was massively influential musically for thousands of bands. Oasis are the reason I picked up a guitar. Though, I don’t feel they have a massive effect on us musically as a group, we don’t sound like them, or try to emulate their style. I think generally I just sit down and let the songs come out as they want to. I suppose everyone draws on their own experience, I know my entire life influences how I write a song.

With your upcoming headline tour just around the corner, which parts of touring are you looking forward to most?

I love playing live so I look forward to all of it. Every gig has something different happening and I like the unknown element of every one. I suppose Manchester is always good for us being our home town, and it’s the last night of our tour.

Finally, what’s next for Alias Kid and what goals are you aiming to achieve over 2016?

We don't make long term plans with music to be honest. There is so much going on for the band that you have to just react and adapt all the time to what is going on. The only plan is to keep pushing, playing and recording - if you lose the drive to do that then you might as well fuck off home.
