Interview with nineties influenced band

The Hundred Inevitables

The Hundred Inevitables are an American band who are heavily influenced by nineties music. We were able to get an interview with the lead singer Toby Pipes to talk about his band’s music, and their influences on creating their first album Decade Of Downtime that was created last year.

Q1: Where do you all come from?

We're all from around Denton and Dallas, Texas.

Q2: When did you decide you wanted to become a band?

I think the first discussion about it was on a tour bus in Austria in the mid 90's. Clay and I were in a band called Deep Blue Something and Jeff (who was in a band called Adams Farm that played shows with us from time to time) was helping us out while we were on a European festival run that summer. I forgot what actually brought it up, but we decided to give it a go once we got back to Texas and everything settled down with DBS for a bit.

Q3: Why do you call yourselves The Hundred Inevitables?

It’s mentioned a few times in the liner notes of a Dylan record highway 65 revisited "The Hundred Inevitables hide their predictions and go to bars and drink and get drunk in their very special conscious way."

Q4: So you are band that has been influenced by nineties music, how did that come about? Why this particular decade?

I guess because we were all in bands in the mid to late 90's, we were surrounded by it...but the early 90's were definitely an influence to all of us.

Q5: Which bands/artists have influenced you to create a band with the nineties sound?

I can't really speak for everyone, but for myself in that decade it would've begun with The Stone Roses, Slow Dive, Charlatans, and a band out of California called Jellyfish. And of course all of the Blur, Suede and Oasis stuff were great. We (DBS) actually played a show with Oasis early on during their first run through Dallas at a club called Deep Ellum Live. They were fantastic!

Q6: What bands/artist from the nineties did you listen to?

I still listen to all of those bands and a ton of stuff from before like The Smiths, The Cure and Big Star.

Q7: What kind of comments do you get from people when they have heard your music due to the nineties influence sound?

The "nineties influenced sound" references have just started coming up lately with this new record, so I’m just now wrapping my head around it.

Q8: As you’re a nineties sounding band, what do you guys wear when performing? Any flares? Ha!

Ha! I have to admit we're pretty boring on our stage attire, jeans and black t-shirts mainly. I tried a suit once too much of a hassle.

Q9: You have an album out already which is great; do you have any plans on releasing another album?

Not really sure, I’m sure we'll get going again on some new tunes at some point. It took us over ten years to get this one out so I wouldn't wait at the bus stop for it.

Q10: What are the plans for the future of the band? Tours?

I live in Boston at the moment, Nolan lives in NYC and everyone is really busy with all other projects right now:

  • Taylor is touring with a band called The O's and they just released a new record.

  • Jeff is playing with his band Psycho Pony.

  • Nolan and I are just now starting to release a few singles from our project called N∆TIONS that we've been working on the last year or so out of Brooklyn...

And Deep Blue Something is actually starting to get back together for a few shows every now and then, so things are a bit busy. But I'm moving back to Texas this summer and hopefully we can start working out a few shows and maybe a quick tour starting around then.

Q11: Have you got any advice for bands/artists that are starting out now?

Don't rush anything. Get it right. You have plenty of time.
