Non-Profit Raises Money For Legendary Venue by Celebrating Green Day’s Dookie
Green Day’s 1994 record Dookie was celebrated on 19 February to raise money for the iconic Berkeley venue, 924 Gilman.
‘A Tribute to Dookie’ took place at Oakland’s Fox Theatre. Undercover Presents, a non-profit Californian Bay Area organization, organized the event and selected 14 locals acts to each perform a song from Dookie in their own style. The covers included a 10-minute dramatic performance of ‘Basket Case’ by The Fuxedos and Jazz Mafia’s gospel rendition of ‘Longview’.
“If you wanted to hear bands play Green Day songs in the style of Green Day, this is not that show,” stated Lyz Luke, co-founder of UnderCover Presents.
Green Day and Dookie helped make hometown venue 924 Gilman successful, but now it’s being threatened by the refurbishment of Berkeley’s Gilman district.
Green Day attended the fundraiser event as special guests, but didn’t perform during the night. Instead singer Billie Joe Armstrong gave a speech at the end of the night praising the East Bay punk scene and 924 Gilman.
